This was the Memorial (now Woodruff) Arts Center under construction in 1967.  Notice the Castle in the background, fronted by a long gone apartment building.  It’s weird to see it surrounded by trees instead of office towers.

It has been five months since the High Museum opened the doors to its acclaimed $124 million expansion, and already there are plans to build on architect Renzo Piano’s vision of a lively, pedestrian- friendly “village for the arts.”

This is Midtown Atlanta, after all, where the construction never stops.

The walls will come tumbling down at the Woodruff Art Center’s Memorial Arts Building on Tuesday, as work begins on remaking the austere 26-year-old facility into a more inviting Midtown presence.
