The echoes of opera that wander the decrepit Erlanger Theater on Peachtree Street - once known as “Atlanta’s Playhouse Beautiful” - are about to be silenced.
The appearance of the Hudgins Co. wrecking ball Tuesday behind the old brick theater in Midtown prompted one person to telephone the North Avenue Presbyterian Church, owners of the vacant, hulking theater next door, and threaten to interrupt the demolition.
Rumors spread among the workers about protesters chaining themselves to the old structure. The supervisor of the crew said the wrecking ball tentatively is scheduled to swing Monday.
