The Atlanta Beltline’s Eastside Trail as seen from the Virginia Avenue bridge near 10th Street and Monroe Drive. Once complete, the path would link Piedmont Park and Inman Park and eventually connect to DeKalb Avenue. Project officials have said they’re aiming for a summer completion date.

I’ll be honest: I went and looked at cars this past weekend. For the most part, I’ve been functioning perfectly fine without one. Maybe I should have written “grudgingly looked.” While I was a little excited at gaining some independence, I wasn’t looking forward to throwing $XXX.XX a month at a car payment, insurance, gas, and assorted maintenance.

To be exact, that extra chunk of change is nice for: going out, buying nice groceries, going out, buying Apple products, going out (haha okay I’ll stop), clothing, accessories, stuff for my apartment, my coffee addiction, books and magazines, frequent haircuts, phone bills, music, yoga classes, health insurance, a new bike, memberships to the High and the Botanical Garden…in other words, things I value so much more than automobile ownership. I don’t need a car, but the option of having one is appreciated. Then I remembered about ZipCar.

It’s a little surreal how easy the signup and usage protocol are. You choose a payment plan online, sign up with a credit card and driver’s license, and after approval (which took less than 24 hours for me), you can either pick up the Zip Card at their offices downtown or wait for it to be mailed. To drive, all you do is reserve a vehicle from your computer or smartphone (love the iPhone app!) and you’re good to go. There are a ton of Zipcars placed around my apartment in the center of Midtown, but they can also be found all throughout the city. Depending on how much I want to spend, the trip’s purpose, and what’s available, I can drive anything from a MINI convertible to a BMW 3 Series, from a Prius to a Volvo S40, and even trucks and SUVs. They pay the gas and insurance. You get a sweet ride without commitment. I’m psyched.

ALMOST DONE

“Living Walls seeks to promote, educate, and change perspectives toward public space in our communities via street art.”

Living Walls, The City Speaks, is an annual conference on street art and urbanism that began in August 2010 in the city of Atlanta. Along with changing the urban landscape, the Living Walls conference set out to highlight a number of problems facing the city. Living Walls did not just showcase art, but also built a platform for much-needed dialogue in the city.

I noticed this wall on Saturday in the Old Fourth Ward. It’s awesome!
